Shop for grounding sheets and you'll see silver percentages on every label: 5%, 8%, 10%, sometimes higher. It's natural to assume more silver means "more grounding." That's not quite how it works.
Silver content matters, but for a different reason than most people expect. Here's what it changes, what it doesn't, and how to compare sheets yourself.
What silver does in a grounding sheet
A grounding sheet is mostly cotton, with conductive silver threads woven through it in a grid. The cotton is for comfort. The silver threads are the electrical path: they carry the connection from wherever your skin touches the sheet to the cord, and from the cord to ground.
Silver is used because it conducts electricity extremely well, resists tarnish better than copper, and survives being woven into fabric.
What more silver does NOT do
A brand-new 5% sheet and a brand-new 10% sheet ground you to essentially the same degree.
Here's why. Every grounding cord includes a safety resistor, typically 100,000 ohms, like the one in GroundLuxe cords. Your skin adds its own resistance too. A working silver grid, by comparison, measures only a tiny fraction of that. Doubling the silver lowers an already-tiny number further. It doesn't change the overall path in any way you'd notice or a meter would show in a body voltage test.
So if a brand claims its higher silver content gives you a "stronger" grounding effect on night one, be skeptical. That includes us.
What more silver DOES do
Silver content earns its keep over time, in three ways.
- More contact points. More silver usually means a denser grid. With a tighter grid, more of your skin is close to a conductive thread no matter how you sleep, including if you only have a foot or forearm on the sheet.
- Redundancy. Every grounding sheet slowly loses some fibers to friction, washing, and body oils. When a grid has more threads, losing some still leaves plenty of paths to the cord. A sparse grid has less margin before dead spots appear.
- Longer useful life. Taken together, those two effects mean a sheet keeps working longer before its conductivity drops off. That's the real reason to care about silver percentage: you're paying for a sheet that keeps working, not one that grounds harder.
Why sheets lose conductivity
No silver percentage protects a sheet from bad laundry habits. A 2022 study on silver-based conductive textiles found that detergent residue increased electrical resistance over 20 wash-and-dry cycles.
The practical takeaways:
- Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets. They coat fibers in a film that insulates the silver.
- Skip bleach and whitening boosters. They tarnish and degrade silver.
- Use a small amount of plain detergent. More isn't cleaner, just more residue.
- Dry on gentle. High heat is hard on conductive fibers. GroundLuxe recommends washing warm or cool and drying on gentle.

How to compare grounding sheets
Silver percentage is one line on the label. Look at the whole picture:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Silver percentage | More silver means a denser grid and a longer working life |
| Cotton quality and thread count | This is what you'll feel every night |
| Pocket depth | Too shallow and the sheet pops off, especially on thick mattresses |
| Warranty length | Tells you how long the brand expects conductivity to last |
| What's included | A cord, an outlet tester, and clear test instructions |
| Return window | Gives you time to see how it fits your sleep |
Test it yourself
You don't have to take any brand's word for it, including ours. With a multimeter on the resistance (Ω) setting, touch one probe to the ground prong of the cord's plug and press the other against the sheet in several spots: the middle, the corners, where your feet go. A healthy sheet with a 100k-ohm cord reads near 100k ohms everywhere. If some spots read "OL," the silver there has worn out or is coated.
Retesting every few months is a quick way to catch fading conductivity early. The GroundLuxe Multimeter Testing Kit includes step-by-step grounding instructions.
Why GroundLuxe uses 10% silver
GroundLuxe fitted sheets are 400-thread-count organic cotton woven with 10% conductive silver fiber, about twice the silver of many sheets on the market. We chose it for the reasons above: a denser grid and more margin as the sheet ages. Every sheet carries a 2-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.
